The lack of adequate police presence during the Unite the Right rally in 2017, Charlottesville, Va, ended in two tragic fatalities. This resulted in peaceful protests the following year, where heavy police presence was directed towards peaceful protesters. This raised concerning questions about law enforcement’s response to protests and demonstrations.
For many, this highlighted the imbalance of the state and police's treatment of different ideological groups. This disproportionate reaction by law enforcement against left wing movements sends a deeply troubling signal for the future of democracy. Such events spark crucial conversation about the role of law enforcement, the protection of free speech, and the responsibility of the state to ensure the safety of all citizens regardless of race, political affiliation, and beliefs.
A Watchful State captures the events of Aug 11th 2018 offering a visual journey into these events.
