"You can always tell when a person has worked in a restaurant. There is an empathy that can only be cultivated by those who've stood between a hungry mouth and a $28 pork chop, a special understanding of the way a bunch of motley misfits can be a family." - Anthony Bourdain
Tavern & Grocery captures an extraordinary moment from November 2019 - March 2020. On March 24th 2020, all restaurant dining rooms were ordered to close due the surge of COVID-19. That day, many of us lost our livelihoods but more importantly we lost the space where an unlikely cast had created a diverse family, bonded together by late nights, demanding customers, post-shift joints, and countless cigarette breaks.
In the crucible of working in a restaurant is a vision for how we can come together with our essential humanity, forging friendships across beliefs and generation by engaging in the all important business of feeding and helping each other. These photos aren't just a photojournalistic study but a family album, both personal and universal. A tribute to a community built on the precipice of a global pandemic.
